Rescued by my NasaFlo Neti Pot

Posted: November 23rd, 2008 | Author: Brandice |

I bought a NasaFlo Neti Pot a couple of months ago, when I was having major sinus issues and allergy problems. Several people had recommended neti pot, and I was miserable enough to try anything… at least, I thought I was.

Turns out, after reading the directions and really thinking about it, I was too terrified of accidentally drowning myself with saline water to actually use the thing until this morning, when I woke up with another sinus invasion.

I finally felt miserable and stuffed up enough to risk drowning, so I poured filtered water into the little blue pot, microwaved the water (I don’t think I made it warm enough… next time I’ll be braver with the temperature), poured in the little packet of magical dust, and headed in to the bathroom.

When I first tipped my head forward and to the side and put the spout of the little pot to my nostril, I didn’t even realize it was already pouring water in until the water came out the other side. No choking, no burning, just a stream of warm water and slightly strange feeling in my nose, and after I blew my nose and did the other side…

RELIEF.

I don’t care how gross it sounds, or that my greatest fear is of drowning, that was TOTALLY FRIGGIN’ WORTH IT. I will be hitting that little blue pot again in the near future, I suspect. If you haven’t tried it and you have sinus issues, it really is an instant source of temporary relief.

This little blue pot is my new best friend. :)

Ahahaha, nice! I've never actually done that... but I've never had major sinus issues before, either. I suppose if it does happen one day, I'll remember this post and look for a little neti pot.
  • Any neti pot will do, too. Don't have to get this particular one, because there are a bunch of them. :)
  • I've been considering trying one of these for a while (I have bad allergies in the spring), but I've been a little apprehensive about the whole "pour water into your nose" idea. Maybe this spring, I'll give it a try :)
  • I definitely recommend it, and I'll be using it in the spring as well, when my allergies hit. :)

Neti pots are amazing. I have a different product made by NeilMed, which is basically a squeezy upright bottle with a hole in the cap, but miss how well a real Neti pot works so I've been thinking of switching to the one you have.

Suggestions: Always have the water just slightly warmer than lukewarm but nowhere near hot. NEVER use cold water and NEVER use water without the saline solution. Both lead to horrible burning awful awfulness. Also, when you blow your nose afterward, do so gently or else you'll end up with weird popping pressure in your ears.

And unless you tilt your head back, you will definitely not drown.
  • Thanks for those suggestions! Those are all really good things to know, especially about never using plain warm water. I never would've thought of that. :)

You definitely need to post some video. It's pretty hard to believe!
  • Haha... I'm pretty sure that shooting video of me running saline solution through my nose is NOT on my list of things to do. I'll do some funky stuff on cam, but that's going a little too far... booger water must be where I draw the line. LOL.

Welcome to the ranks of Neti Pot users!!

I agree with all the above advice...

If you have a choice I would go with a glass neti...then you can pop it in the dishwasher to get a good cleaning between or you can sterilize it with no worries

...also the better the quality of water, non chlorinated etc...(just like anything else)....is more gentle on the delicate membranes.

Same goes for the salt you use...you want Sea Salt if you have a choice...Real salt is another good brand.

Here's a video that also shows an exercise that helps all the water drain! Their product is very good as well.

I use a product called Navage that is a modern day neti pot. It is easier to use and I like that they have pre-mixed nose rinses because I tend to have a heavy hand with the salt.
