rating: 4 of 5 stars This was really, really good, and I loved the extra sketches and fun bits at the end of the book. Really cool way to present the beginning of Batman, paralleled with Gordon’s start in Gotham as well.
rating: 4 of 5 stars Wow. Heavy, screwed up stuff. I’m definitely in for the long haul with this comic series. Half of the time I’m cringing away from certain panels and the rest of the time I’m thinking about the implications of what this series has to say about god/religion/people. Thought provoking, disturbing, and I’ll be reading volume 3.
I’m thinking a lot right now about time management and the fact that I have successfully found a way to fit everything into my life, but with the discovery that using my time for certain projects isn’t something that’s necessarily worth doing.
Re-evaluation in progress… Learning that while I know I definitely have the time, I’ve come to learn the value of that time, and that what I put energy into needs to be worthy of that time and energy.
One project has already been put aside, or rather adjusted to fit into my new role as the host (minus the “co-”) of STeaP, and I feel pretty good about the change, but in other areas and with one project in particular, I feel that my changed role as a social worker first and an online media pro second has eliminated my voice entirely. My feeling is of being perceived with diminished value, rather than diminished time and a newly pared down role.
I speak and I am not heard, and then I think to myself that perhaps my desire and my effort might be well-intentioned, but not what is right for that project, or that those who invited me aboard have forgotten why I was worth bringing aboard, and have forgotten to listen.
This month is going to involve some contemplation and hard thinking about making a shift from “what do I have time to do?” to “what should I be using my time to do?” I’m realizing the very important difference between those two questions, and trying to find a balance between them that will solidify direction for my energy in the long term.
This has been your Brandice-flavored contemplation for today. :) As you were.
rating: 4 of 5 stars This had some really funny parts in it. I really enjoyed it, and it’s a series I will probably keep up with. Quick reading, snarky humor about two maintenance men who clean up bizarre and often humorous messes for an evil organization.
rating: 4 of 5 stars I go back and forth on this series, some volumes really grabbing me and others just mildly entertaining. This was a good volume, with some *really* interesting twists that I’m eager to read more about. This is the first volume that has me antsy to go buy the next volume so that I can find out what’s going to happen to this fable or that fable. Good stuff. :)
rating: 4 of 5 stars This was really very stunning artwork by several artists (different one for each story), and I love the twists to each of these stories so that they actually tell you a bit more about the characters in the Fables series.
Really great artwork, and I enjoyed it overall… I hope there will be more of these special hardcovers from Fables down the line.
If you haven’t experienced The Killing Joke deluxe edition, recolored by Brian Bolland himself, man are you ever missing out. Amazing stuff, not to mention a killer story by a comic book genius (Alan Moore). Glad I picked this up.
NaNoWriMo is launching the 2008 version of the website soon, and you know what that means… Nano is coming! I have two possible plots and can’t wait for November. :)
